Asthma

Asthma can limit you every day with shortness of breath, wheezing, and the constant feeling of not getting enough air.

What many people unfortunately don’t realise is that the way they breathe can make these symptoms worse.

With asthma, breathing is usually fast, high in the chest, and often through the mouth. The Buteyko Method helps you return to calm, light breathing through the nose. Through targeted breathing exercises, you learn how to settle your breathing and respond more effectively to early asthma symptoms.

What happens in your airways

In asthma, the airways are extra sensitive to narrowing. This has three interrelated causes:

  • tension in the smooth muscle tissue surrounding the airways
  • inflammation of the airway lining
  • increased mucus production

As the airways narrow, your body tries to compensate by breathing more air: faster, deeper, and often through the mouth. That may feel logical — but it actually has the opposite effect.

Why breathing more can make symptoms worse

Breathing too much — also known as overbreathing or hyperventilation — causes you to exhale too much carbon dioxide (CO₂). CO₂ is not just a waste gas; it is essential for allowing the smooth muscle around the airways to relax. When CO₂ levels drop, this muscle tissue remains more tense, causing the airways to narrow even further.

In addition, your lungs have an enormous internal surface area and are constantly exposed to the outside air. Overbreathing — especially through the mouth — leads to excessive loss of warmth and moisture. This makes the airways more sensitive and can trigger coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness — exactly the symptoms you are trying to avoid.

Breathing therapy for asthma: less instead of more

The Buteyko Method does not focus on breathing more or harder, but on breathing lighter, calmer, and through the nose. With specific breathing exercises, you learn to reduce your breathing volume to a healthy level.

More control over your asthma

Adults and children from the age of six can learn to manage asthma symptoms with breathing exercises. We start with simple exercises to help open the nose and make nasal breathing feel natural again.

You will also learn specific techniques to manage the early signs of an asthma attack. Many people notice that they need their reliever inhaler less and less often.

Experience shows that the Buteyko Method can lead to a significant reduction in shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing, up to 90% less use of bronchodilators and nearly 50% less need for anti-inflammatory medication. Any adjustment to medication is always done in consultation with the treating physician.

By changing the way you breathe, you can gain (more) control over your asthma symptoms.
