Breathing course for children

The Buteyko Method also has much to offer for children. The breathing course for children is suitable from about 6 years of age. Up to the age of about 13 or 14 years, the exercises are different than those for adults. However, the goal is the same: restoring nasal breathing and a calm breathing pattern.

Healthy breathing in children

Young people benefit from the Buteyko Method when they experience issues such as asthma, allergies, a blocked nose, coughing, fatigue, poor sleep, bedwetting, and vague hyperventilation-related complaints such as dizziness and poor concentration. In general, they tend to recover faster than adults, often within two to three months. As a result, asthma symptoms decrease or may disappear altogether. Furthermore, children gain more energy and their concentration improves.

Program

The course consists of two or three one-hour sessions, plus various course materials including the course book. The program is structured around four themes:

  • Switching to nasal breathing
  • Practicing three times a day
  • Breathing during sleep and sports

Together with a parent or caregiver

WIth young people up to about 16 years old it is important to have a parent or caregiver participating at the course. This allows parents to properly support their child at home. Consequently, they can encourage consistent practice of the exercises, promote nasal breathing and help avoid triggers.
